Saya Hanawa was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1991. She has a BFA in oil painting from the Tokyo University of the Arts (2014) and MFA in Fine Arts from School of Visual Arts (2018). She is making works that are concerned with avatars of the human body and the way digital interfacing shapes who we are. Like her millennial peers, she is obsessed with her cellphone, and social media as the primary way of engaging communally and archiving physical reality. She is interested in the role of these technologies, and how they relate to the physical handmade art object. She hopes that she can continue to work with her ideas and contribute to the wider world.
